Scientific Supercomputing

The Scientific Supercomputing Center (SSC Karlsruhe) as part of the Computing Center of University Karlsruhe operates a HP XC4000 System as high performance computer of the federal state Baden-Württemberg; this supercomputer is embedded into the infrastrucure of the High Performance Computing Competence Center Baden-Württemberg (hkz-bw) and can be provided for projects from the universities of our federal state requiring computing power which can not be satisfied by local resources and is also available to users from private enterprises against refund of costs. The system is based on the AMD dual core Opteron processor with a theoretical peak performance of 15.77 TFlop/s and somewhat more than 12 TB main memory

Further supercomputers that can be used from the scientifists of University Karlsruhe are the powerful parallel computer HP XC6000 with more than 280 processors and the vector-parallel supercomputer NEC SX-8R with 16 processors. Both HP XC systems are adjusted to the various requirements of numerous application areas and admit jobs with very large datasets because of the balanced ratio of CPU performance and memory capacity.

The users of the SSC Karlsruhe will be supported at the best. The service ranges from the guidance for the optimal usage to the support on the porting of program packages and migration of data to the supercomputers of the SSC.

To bundle the personal and financial power in the area of supercomputing the Universities Karlsruhe and Stuttgart have founded the "Höchstleistungsrechner-Kompetenzzentrum Baden-Württemberg (hkz-bw)". As the nucleus the "Höchstleistungsrechenzentrum der Universität Stuttgart (HLRS)" and the Scientific Supercomputing Center of University Karlsruhe (SSCK) have built up this center and provide the essential services to run such a supercomputer center.
