Conditions of Participation

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Otto Lehmann Foundation award a prize for important works in the field of liquid crystal technology. The award is given yearly since 1998. The founders of the award are:

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter M. Knoll, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT),
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.h.c.mult. Dieter A. Mlynski, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT),
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dieter Krause, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT),
Robert Bosch GmbH, Stuttgart,
Merck KGaA, Darmstadt.

  1. The goal of the competition is to award young scientists for an outstanding thesis, i.e. diploma or master thesis, doctoral or inaugural dissertation (Habilitation), in the field of liquid crystals.

The thesis can derive from one of the following fields:

    • Synthesis of new liquid crystal materials,
    • New liquid crystal effects and their technical application,
    • New liquid crystal technologies,
    • New materials for liquid crystal displays,
    • New simulation methods for liquid crystal effects,
    • New effective illumination technologies for liquid crystal displays,
    • New methods for the improvement of the optical performance and the legibility of liquid crystal displays,
    • New (active and passive) addressing technologies for liquid crystal displays,
    • New cell technologies for liquid crystal displays.

  2. Applicants shall outline their scientific career with a detailed curriculum vitae.

  3. Paper submission must be in five copies and may be either in German or in English. The submitted papers may be unpublished and prepublished; in the latter case the first publication should not be older than one and a half year. The submitted papers will remain in the property of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). All copyrights remain with the authors.

Each submitted paper must contain a three page summary in German or English. The summary should include the following issues:

    • Description of the problem,
    • Objectives,
    • Approach of solution,
    • Results, and comments on their previous publication
  4. If not already done so in the submitted paper, the applicant must confirm in written form:

    • that she/he does not violate intellectual properties of a third party,
    • that only the referred literature was used,
    • that the paper has not been submitted in a competition elsewhere, and not yet been prize-winning elsewhere.

  5. Applications for the prize shall be submitted to the following address:

    Otto-Lehmann-Stiftung
    c/o Professor Mlynski
    Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
    Kaiserstraße 12
    76128 Karlsruhe, Germany.

Overseas applicants may send their documents by mail in electronic form.
The deadline for the submission is mentioned in the yearly award announcement. All applicants will be informed about the evaluation of their submitted paper in proper time.

  6. The evaluation of the submitted papers is in the responsibility of an independent scientific jury consisting of experts from universities and industry. If necessary, the jury may request supporting documents to the submitted material provided that given terms are considered. The final decision for the award(s) is made by the Otto Lehmann Foundation without claim on rights. There will be no justify-cations for not given awards.

  7. The award ceremony will take place either at the end of the summer semester or at the beginning of the winter semester at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Each award winner must be present and give a short presentation of her/his work. There will be no refund of travel expenses.

  8. There will be no claim on rights. The decisions of the jury are unimpeachable. The applicant accepts the above mentioned conditions and terms with her/his application for the prize.
